At Bayview Oxwich we offer guests double the opportunity to celebrate love! Not only do we celebrate St Valentine’s Day on 14th February, but in Wales, we also celebrate our very own patron saint of lovers, St Dwynwen, on 25th January – Dydd Santes Dwynwen/St Dwynwen’s Day.
Dwynwen was a beautiful 5th Century Welsh princess and one of the 24 daughters of King Bryana Brychieniog. She fell in love with a prince named Maelon, but her father arranged for her to marry someone else. In despair, Dwynwen prayed and an angel appeared, giving her three wishes: for Maelon to be freed from her, for help for all true lovers, and for her to never marry. Dwynwen then devoted her life to God as a nun and never married
To celebrate this, Welsh people today exchange gifts and cards and often carved love spoons. Couples also take walks together, enjoying precious time together in the open air, or sharing special meals.
