What’s in a name?
At Bayview Oxwich we’ve been a little late to the party and only recently realised that Gower’s status has been changed from Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) to National Landscape. What’s in a name you might ask? A lot, it seems. And it’s all good now and for the future.
It is well known, and we take great pride in the fact, that Gower was the UK’s first ever-designated AONB back in 1956. The status recognised its unique natural beauty which Gower has been sharing with visitors for decades. The new National Landscape status (as of 22 11 2023) only serves to enhance this, reflecting the ambition for the ‘30/30’ goal, to conserve and protect 30% of Gower’s land and sea for biodiversity by 2030. This is great news for us and for all our visitors who #lovelandscapes to know Gower is going to be loved even more, so that everyone can enjoy what it has to offer for the long term.
It's worth reminding ourselves and visitors to Bayview Oxwich just what diversity of natural landscapes, culture and history our compact peninsula has:
spectacular beaches – secret coves and expansive sandy bays
dramatic limestone cliffs
moorlands, such as Gower’s spine, Cefn Bryn
estuary and saltmarshes
pristine woodlands
dark skies
17 beautiful historic churches as well as many Celtic and sacred sites
romantic castles
unique range of flora and fauna
mild climate ameliorated by sea
megaliths
So, if you #lovelandscapes and want to see why the Gower peninsula is one of only 46 UK areas with the accolade of Natural Landscape, we’d love you to come and make Bayview Oxwich your base.
