Happy Birthday Gower Peninsula – celebrating 70 years as the UK’s first AONB
We’ve recently celebrated a big birthday for our very own Gower peninsula. On 9th May, we took time to count our blessings for the world class countryside on our doorstep as we recognised Gower’s 70 years as the UK’s first ever designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB 1956).
Back then, the Gower peninsula was awarded this designation because of its stunning natural landscapes which are as beautiful and unspoiled today as they were in 1956. From award-winning beaches and dramatic limestone cliffs, to rolling green commons, salt marshes, hidden coves and charming villages (such as our very own village of Oxwich) Gower has been stopping people in their tracks for generations.
More recently, the Gower peninsula has also been designated one of the 46 National Landscapes across the UK, strengthening the commitment to preserving Gower’s natural beauty, ensuring it remains sustainable for future generations to enjoy.
