Spring Safari in Gower

At Bayview Oxwich the primroses are out and the bluebells in our woods about to burst into bloom. Spring is definitely springing! It’s such a great season to be out and about and see what Gower has to offer, as we often have to remind ourselves (and our guests) that Gower was the UK’s first-ever designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB 1956) and Spring shows us why.

Untouched. Unspoiled. Often unpeopled. Right on our doorstep at Oxwich we have habitats that are a paradise for bird watchers and a rich wonderland for walkers and lovers of all things flora and fauna. Oxwich Nature Reserve is one such area that can be reached on foot in 5-mins from Bayview. And it’s not just us that wants to flag up Oxwich’s diverse birdlife and wildlife.

Last year, Wales’ national treasure, Iolo Williams spent time walking and filming in the Reserve here at Oxwich and at nearby Cefn Bryn (the upland ridge known as the spine of Gower). Iolo, admired as a Naturalist, Conservationist, Public Speaker, Writer as well as being a TV Broadcaster and Personality, made a 6-min+ film in which he enthuses about Gower’s natural bounty.

He raves about Oxwich Reserve’s sand dunes frilling the sweep of sandy bay, about the marshes behind. He talks about the sightings of otters (some of the best chances of seeing these creatures in the UK); he marvels at the rabbits and the burrows underfoot and the buzzards in abundance overhead. Then there are the moorhens and the mallards, the grebes and the wildfowl, all in this peaceful and protected setting. He takes cover in the beautiful hide in the Reserve to observe all these species which it is his life’s work to conserve.

You can whet your appetite by watching this gorgeous film ‘Spring Safari in Swansea Bay – Gower’ and then come and do the real thing yourself and stay with us in one of our beautiful contemporary cottages, luxury apartments or in our exclusive retreat.

Wanda and the Team here at Bayview will be happy to advise on any query you have about our holiday rental properties and book you into what best suits your needs. If you’re quick you can book tickets to see Iola Williams at Taliesin Arts Centre at Swansea University on Friday 26th, April, when he will be talking about what we all can do to help wildlife. You can order tickets here at www.taliesinartscentre.co.uk
