Awesome in autumn – 10 things to do in Gower when the crowds have gone

At Bayview Oxwich we love autumn in Gower: the peninsula exhales, the beaches empty, the light softens and it becomes a place for slow wandering, quiet noticing, and perfect moments when you feel you have the magic all to yourself.

Here are 10 out-of-season things to do that make Gower awesome in autumn:

  1. Walk Rhossili Down at golden hour – the ridge is almost empty in October, giving views across the bay. Perfect for a walk with a friend or in solo contemplation.

  2. Beachcomb on Llangennith Bay after an autumn tide – with most of the holiday makers gone home, the beach returns to its wild self, open to Atlantic energy and autumn storms which wash up driftwood, shells, and sea-treasure not seen in summer.

  3. Explore the quiet rock pools at Pwll Du – out of season, Pwll Du feels like a secret (it’s one of our favourite spots). The rock pools are still, clear and full of tiny autumn sea life.

  4. Walk the marsh paths at Llanrhidian – the saltmarsh turns russet and gold, the bird life abounds, and there’s an atmospheric hush making it one of the best places in Gower for quiet, slow photography.

  5. Have Oxwich Bay almost to yourself – misty mornings, empty sands, ideal for walking and listening to the sound of only your own footsteps.

  6.  Take a woodland walk in Parc le Breos – with beech leaves underfoot and soft light through the canopy and barely another person around, here you’ll find autumn in its most story-like. A world away, but only 10-min by car from Bayview Oxwich.

  7. Watch the migratory birds at Whiteford – Whiteford’s dunes and lighthouse in the north of the peninsula are atmospheric all-year-round, but autumn brings waders, geese and sweeping skies, perfect for an out-of-season wander or for serious twitchers!

  8. Warm up in a quiet Gower café – the crowds might have gone but the many cafés are still open. Try a hot chocolate after a brisk walk in Mumbles, Rhossili, Southgate or Reynoldston.

  9. Watch the weather roll in from Worm’s Head – autumn skies over this iconic limestone tidal island are dramatic – pewter seas, sudden shafts of light and the sense of being at the edge of the world and yet only a 15-min drive from Bayview Oxwich.

  10. End the day with a west-facing sunset – you can see the sun rise over the bay here at Oxwich, and just 20-min by car you can see the sun set over Rhossili Bay. Voted the best sunset in the UK, in autumn it really puts on a show and the horizon is all yours
