Carys Zeta Jones goes back to her Gower roots in Vogue interview

The Gower peninsula and Swansea, its nearby city by the sea, grabbed the headlines in the November 2025 edition of high-end publication Vogue. Between its glossy covers, Carys Zeta Jones, the twenty-two-year-old daughter of Swansea-born film icon and Oscar-winner, Catherine Zeta Jones and Hollywood royalty, Michael Douglas, took readers on an emotional journey back to lovingly-remembered holidays spent with family in the Gower peninsula.

At Bayview Oxwich, it was wonderful to read about the connection Carys has with the place of her mother’s birth, and with her grandparents, David and Pat Jones, who still live here and with whom, Carys has spent two weeks every summer throughout her childhood.

Carys, like us at Bayview Oxwich, and all the guests who stay with us, has built a deep connection with Gower. It was interesting to read about Carys’ experiences and some of her favourite things to see and do, and realise how closely they matched with ours and those of our visitors.

Carys Zeta Jones put the spotlight on:

  • Johnnie’s fish and chip shop in Mumbles – Mumbles being the home of her mother CZJ, cod and chips is a firm favourite, not to be missed

  • Joes’ Ice Cream – this brand with its secret recipe for its famed vanilla ice cream is not to be missed and now has five parlous in the area

  • Gower’s pristine landscape and beaches – recalling digging and building sandcastles and simple pleasures

  • Langland and Caswell Bays – she described both as ‘eclectic’

  • Beaches which she termed ‘some of the most beautiful in the world’ and enthused about them being ‘mystical’, ‘dramatic’, and ‘breath-taking’.

  • Worm’s Head – Gower’s iconic tidal island at Rhossili couldn’t fail not to get a mention and Carys described it as ‘romantic’

  • Gower’s wild ponies

  • Swansea’s Grand Theatre and Dylan Thomas Theatre – venues where her mother made early appearances

  • Sunday roasts, Welsh cakes and love spoons – all of which are available in abundance in the area

  • It was great to read about Carys’ sense of belonging to the place of her mother’s birth. But you don’t have to come from the Gower peninsula to feel you belong here in the area. They say Gower gets under the skin, and into the blood and that’s why our guests to Bayview Oxwich return to us year after year.
