Celebrating the 25th anniversary of RNLI Lifeguards on Gower beaches
Visitors to our lovely Gower peninsula will be familiar with the sight of the distinctive red and yellow branding of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution’s Lifeguards patrolling many of our beaches during the summer months. And this year, 2026, marks 25 years of their professional services, saving lives across many beaches in the UK and Channel Islands.
It is so reassuring to have these world-class lifeguards on our beaches, supported by the RNLI charity which recruits, trains and equips them. And pays them! Many of us in Gower remember when we didn’t have this professional service and depended on brave volunteers (seasonal Local Authority Lifeguards and volunteers from surf clubs) who risked their lives to save those who got into trouble in the sea.
Today over 245 beaches in the UK and Channel Islands have professional lifeguards and since 2001 when the RNLI Lifeguards came into being, over 2,000 lives have been saved.
Gower’s beaches are diverse: different terrains, some with hazardous riptides, and many having a large number of visitors during the summer season. It is comforting for our visitors to know that four of the ‘hot spots’ are fully patrolled every day during the summer season from 4th July until 6th September from 10.00-18.00, as well as during the school holidays prior to this and at weekends in the run up to the summer season proper.
We all love to see their familiar huts and the reassurance of the flags on the beaches of Port Eynon, Langland, Caswell, and within sight of Bayview Oxwich, our very own Three Cliffs Bay. Just a reminder that the red and yellow flags indicate that the area between the flags is patrolled and safe for swimmers and bodyboarders, and that the area between the black and white flags is patrolled for surfboards and hard crafts.
