Welcome/Croeso to Gower’s surfing community
Gower has long been acknowledged as one of the UK’s best surfing destinations. Being a peninsula, and being so compact, there’s always a break of some kind (beach, reef, sand bank) that is working and accessible. That’s why it has drawn surfers – seasoned pros and those starting on their surfing journey – to Gower’s waves, outstanding coastal scenery, and warm Welsh Gower welcome.
At Bayview Oxwich we take pride in Gower’s surfing community. Young and Old, summer and winter, you’ll come across suffers of all abilities when you’re out and about. Only just recently, Bayview Oxwich’s owner, Ellen Reilly, was visiting her mother in her birth-village of Llangennith in the north-west of the peninsula, when she encountered, Gower’s living-legend and surf mega-star, Peter (PJ) Jones just emerging from the waves at Broughton Bay, chatting to my step-father, Philip. There’d been a sizeable swell and there were good breaks off Blue Pool Bay/Little Broughton. Now in his seventies, PJ is living proof of someone for whom surfing is a way of life. He is the epitome of ‘Endless Summer.’
Not only does PJ still carve waves but still is at the heart of his famous PJ surf shop on the village green at Llangennith. This inter-generational surf shop now has PJ’s son, James, and daughter, Lucy, in the business and it is great to see an enterprise that melds family and surfing culture have such world-wide recognition.
Established back in 1979 (when Ellen Reilly was just four and a friend of James Jones!) PJ’s is an iconic destination for locals and tourists alike. People come from all over the globe to visit the shop in person for high quality surfing gear and expert advice, as well as visiting the online shop at www.pjsurfshop.com. Here you can buy or hire, surfboards, wetsuits, body boards and stylish surf wear, see some great storytelling and lovely images, and get information on opening hours and surf conditions.
If you’re an active surfer, at any level, or just want to watch surfers in action, Bayview Oxwich your base, at any time of the year. Oxwich Bay, usually calm and sheltered, offers a magical break when there are huge south-westerly gales blowing and it is blown out on the Atlantic side of the peninsula. And Llangennith is only a 15-min drive away when conditions are great there.
The Bayview Oxwich collection now includes 12 luxury properties for holiday rental. Many of our properties are designed with water sports in mid, having outside showers and place for hanging wetsuit gear.
We extend a huge welcome for you to be part of Gower’s surfing community. For further information on our rental properties and which would suit you and your family or friends best, please contact Wanda and the Team here at Bayview Oxwich who’ll be happy to talk you through the options and help you with your booking.
We hope to see you soon.
